Standards of Excellence in Short-Term Missions

Stewardship & Accountability

Adventures In Missions (AIM) is an established 501(c) (3) non-profit mission organization. As a ministry, we are in need of financial supporters, including churches and individuals, to enable us to continue the work to which God has called us. Although 95% of our employees raise all or a portion of their own salaries to serve the Lord, we have ongoing material, administrative, and technology expenditures. God always graciously fulfills our needs through the faith and generosity of donors who share AIM's vision of fulfilling the Great Commission.

AIM, in partnership with American Churches and individual donors, directly and indirectly makes an eternal impact in the communities where we serve. Donations to specific AIM ministries or non-designated support of AIM will allow AIM to continue the year-round ministry that advances the Kingdom. Your contribution to AIM will make a difference in the lives of the people on the foreign and domestic mission field and in furthering the Great Commission.

Accountability for the resources that God has entrusted to Adventures In Missions begins first of all with our awareness that those who share their time, money, and prayers with AIM view us as stewards. We know that God sees and weighs the merits of our every action. The parable of the master and the wise steward applies to each of us. It is therefore our objective to listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all that we do, and particularly in the larger decisions that we make.

Given man's frailty and inherent corruptibility, checks and balances are necessary. We have placed such mechanisms in place to make a statement that AIM staff want to be above reproach in all that they do. We have an annual audit by an independent auditor and we are members in good standing with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. Our board of directors meets regularly to review the direction and performance of the ministry.

AIM's expenditures are under girded by a philosophy of stewardship based on an emphasis on efficiency. We want those who invest in our ministry to have total confidence in the STEWARDSHIP of their funds. Not only should they be able to rejoice with us in the fruit our ministry bears, but they should feel good about the way in which we keep expenses low. Overhead, as a percentage revenue is budgeted at 9%

A few key principles guide our fund-raising process:

  1. We believe that if God raises up a work, He will provide for it. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. We will ask Him to meet our needs and we'll make them known to others, but we'll always look to God rather than man as our provider.
  2. Given that it is the Lord who orchestrates our affairs, we believe it would show a lack of faith on our part to try to manipulate the emotions of our supporters. We are committed to never seek funds by our own strength or in our own way. When we present the needs of our ministry, it will be in a straightforward way.
  3. We strive to be faithful stewards not only of the resources entrusted to us, but also of the information concerning how those resources are being used. Those who financially support our ministry deserve a regular, accurate accounting of how our funds are being spent.
  4. We will never operate the ministry at a deficit; nor will we seek to raise more funds than we need.
  5. We encourage our supporters to give first to their local church. AIM can assist but never supplant the function of the local church. We also encourage our supporters to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all their decisions. James 1:17 tells us that all good gifts come from God; we as believers are reflecting God's generosity when we give. We believe that your stewardship is part of your own spiritual walk and that in giving you honor and obey God, giving back to Him out of a grateful heart for His grace and mercy toward you.

" ...the Master directed that those who spread the Message be supported by those who believe the Message."
- I Corinthians 9:14 (The Message)

Going Beyond Project Cost

The cost for a short-term mission trip doesn't cover all the expenses incurred by Adventures In Missions to continue its operations. There are many additional financial needs that are incurred as a result of a year-round presence at our ministry bases and beyond. Further, as the interest in short-term trips increases, the demand on our facilities, staff and other resources becomes stretched. We need your financial support to address these needs.

To "mobilize and equip the church for missions," Adventures In Missions is dependent upon the Lord to provide the people whom He desires to be ministry partners with us. Please consider your involvement in furthering the Great Commission with Adventures In Missions.

"Just as each of us how one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each member belongs to all the others."
- Romans 12:4-5

With year-round mission bases in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Swaziland there are a variety of funding needs that are accrued through the ministry. It is through donations and gifts from partner churches, corporate donor sand individual donors that allow Adventures In Missions to make an eternal impact in the communities where we serve.

"Give, and it will be given to you ... For the measure you use, it will be measure to you."
- Luke 6:38

Vision Statement

Communicating a clear picture of AIM by stating what we hope to achieve (Vision), how we interact with our partners (Positioning Statement), what guides our behavior (Values & Convictions), where we are gifted (Core Competencies), enables everyone associated with AIM to understand their roles and feel fulfilled in their call. As such, it should be studied and understood by all AIM stakeholders.

Vision
To produce 10,000 disciple-makers over the next five years.

Motto
“Follow God, Reach our world.”

Positioning Statement
To those Christians who are willing to step out of their comfort zone, Adventures in Missions is the missions organization that uses Jesus’ model of discipleship to respond to the Great Commission by following His call, putting Believers in situations where they are dependent on God so that they experience abundant life and bear fruit.

Values

1. Listening Prayer - Prayer is the basis for our direction and power. Acts 1:8
(puts ministry in motion; puts us in a posture of receiving from & partnering w/ God)
Common misconception: The plans we make are the basis for our direction; hard work the basis of our power.

2. Wild Trust - To succeed, we must constantly attempt things doomed to fail without God.  Hebrews 11:6
(trusting God when it doesn't make sense - this encapsulates obedience)
Common misconception: I can only do what seems realistic.

3. Pervasive Excellence - We work as unto the Lord. Colossians 3:23
(promising a lot and doing more than we promise)
Common misconception: We don’t have to worry about excellence; God’s grace covers all.

4. Foolish Grace - We work with a common spirit of humility and grace.
Philippians 2:1-4

(the prophets don't like it, but we all need it much more than we dispense it)
Common misconception: Confrontation and reconciliation is optional.

5. Holistic Integrity - We do things just because they’re right
(this incorporates shalom and Kingdom - it has to do w/ wholeness & restoration)
Common misconception: If it’s expedient, it’s OK.

Convictions

Our central conviction is that we must organize our lives around the Great Commission, not fit the Great Commission into our lifestyle. See Matt. 28:19  Common misconception: We should strive for personal fulfillment while waiting for Jesus to come

Great Commission Convictions:

1) All Christians are called to share their reason for hope and to make disciples. 1 Peter 3:15
Common misconception: You must be in full-time ministry or have the gift of evangelism in order to share your faith.

2) We must reach out to “the least of these”. Christians are called to target the needy, to set free the captives. Isaiah 61
Common misconception: We should target anyone who is not a Christian.

3) We must equip Believers by implementing Jesus’ model of discipleship. Matthew 9-10
Common misconception: Jesus’ model of discipleship must be updated to fit our culture.

4) We must mobilize young people to join Jesus’ cause – to be disciple-makers. Matthew 9:38
Common misconception: Young people are cynical and lack initiative.
